Now you know: #VacateMcCarthy Recap
With McCarthy out, maybe we can move away from blindly funding the Ukraine conflict.
In case you weren’t paying attention, yesterday, something historic happened—Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives voted to oust their speaker, Kevin McCarthy.
Though I won’t expound here, I see this a big loss for big money, big military, and weaponized government—the uniparty.
Much credit is due to Florida Republican Matt Gaetz. He followed through ousting McCarthy after it became clear that McCarthy had no desire for single subject spending bills or ending the Ukraine war slush fund.
Below are a few points to note for posterity.
#VacateMcCarthy. With the help of 208 Democrats, Florida Republican Matt Gaetz and seven of his colleagues successfully ousted California Republican Kevin McCarthy from the position of Speaker of the House.
The eight Republicans are Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado, Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Rep. Eli Crane of Arizona, Rep. Bob Good of Virginia, Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, and Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana. Most other Republicans voted against ousting McCarthy
Matt Gaetz takes no lectures—nor should he. Matt Gaetz was on fire defending his move to oust McCarthy as speaker: “I take no lecture - on asking patriotic Americans to weigh in and contribute to this fight - from those who would grovel and bend knee for the lobbyists and the special interests who own our leadership - Boo all you want - who have hollowed out this town and have borrowed against the future of our future generations. I’ll be happy to fund my political operation through the work of hard working Americans - ten and twenty and thirty dollars at a time - and you all keep showing up at the lobbyists fundraisers and see how that goes for you. I reserve [my time].”
Hope for moving beyond Ukraine. Hopefully the ousting of the speaker marks a shift away from a willfully blind American imperialistic foreign policy. But house Democrats seem to care more about Ukraine than anything else.
McHenry takes the gavel. North Carolina Republican Patrick McHenry is now the acting Speaker of the House. My understanding is that he’ll be speaker temporarily until the Republicans elect a new one. Below is a collection of posts made by McHenry on X/Twitter.
Nancy Pelosi evicted. Former Democrat Speaker of the House has been evicted from her hideaway office in the capitol by new acting Speaker McHenry.
